Lanesville, South Central roll at SAC cross country meet
The Lanesville boys’ and the South Central girls’ cross country teams captured Southern Athletic Conference team titles Oct. 6 in Lanesville.
The event took place amid soggy conditions in a light rain, but it didn’t seem to faze many runners.
Lanesville placed six runners in the top 15 to take the boys’ honors with 44 points. Borden placed second with 50 points, and South Central took fourth with 87.
‘We knew we had a good team coming into this season; we just had to keep working hard,’ Lanesville coach Evan Bridges said. ‘I told them today to stay focused and each guy run their own race. They each did, and I’m real proud of all of them.’
Borden’s Hunter Williams was well ahead of the competition in the race, finishing first with a time of 16:49.
Lanesville’s Vince Cecil finished fourth, best among the Eagle runners with a time of 17:57. Cecil was flanked by Brandon Price, who took fifth with a time of 18:02.
Also scoring top finishes for Lanesville were Isaac Blackman (ninth, 18:18), Travis Kaake (12th, 18:39), Aaron Borders (14th, 18:59) and Clayton Blank (15th, 19:01).
For the South Central boys, Chris O’Connor led the Rebels with a sixth-place showing, completing the 5 kilometers in 18:04. O’Connor, along with Cecil and Price, earned All-Conference honors for their finishes. South Central’s Nick Soots finished 10th with a time of 18:21.
In the girls’ competition, South Central took the top spot with a team score of 32. Henryville took second with 40 points, followed by New Washington with 50.
Leading all girl runners was South Central’s Rachel Pease, who ran away with the overall title with a time of 20:30. She was more than a second ahead of second-place finisher teammate Lisa Bond (21:48).
Also scoring for the Lady Rebels were Erica Coulter (10th, 24:15), Shelby Miller (11th, 24:31) and Brittany Brown (21st, 27:43).
Representing Lanesville was a pair of top-five finishes. Rachel Butler took third place with a time of 22:15. Not far behind was teammate Miranda Kaake, who took fifth place in 22:28. Butler, Kaake, Pease and Bond earned All-Conference honors.
‘We had two girls at All-Conference,’ Bridges said. ‘Rachel ran really well. We had a (full) team coming in, but we had one gone and the other sick, but I told them to get what they can and a few came away with All-Conference honors.’
The county cross-country meet, slated for Thursday, was canceled due to inclement weather. The Crawford County Sectional took place yesterday (Tuesday). The top 15 individuals and the top five teams advanced to the Crawford County Regional, which will take place Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
In the junior high SAC boys’ race, Lanesville finished fourth and South Central was fifth. Lanesville’s top finisher was Andrew Kennedy in 10th and South Central’s was Cory Ray in 14th. In the girls’ junior high race, Lanesville finished third and South Central failed to record a team score. Leading South Central was Maddie O’Connor with a fifth-place finish and, for Lanesville, Bailey Kaake finished sixth.
