John R. Garry Jr.

John R. (Jack) Garry Jr., 77, New Albany, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services in New Albany.
The son of the late John R. Garry Sr. and Elizabeth Deloughery Garry, he was a graduate of St. Xavier High School in Louisville, a member of the first graduation class of Bellarmine University in 1954 and a graduate of the University of Louisville School of Law in 1962. He was stationed in Germany in 1955 and 1956 while serving in the Army.
He practiced law in New Albany from 1963 until his retirement in 2006, was a lifelong Democrat, was chairman of the Floyd County Democratic Party from 1970 through 1984, was formerly the attorney for the New Albany Housing Authority and the New Albany-Floyd County Library board, was a member of the Floyd County Democrat Men’s Club, Floyd County Bar Association, Indiana Bar Association, Sherman Minton Inns of Court, Cardinal Ritter K of C and Indiana Commission for Higher Education and was a deacon and long-time member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald F. Garry.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, the former Kay Cooper; a son, John R. Garry III; a daughter, Mary Ann Prestigiacomo; a sister, Rose Marie Mahern; and three grandchildren.
Visitation: Wednesday, Sept. 9, after 9 a.m. at Kraft Funeral Service in New Albany.
Funeral liturgy: Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church followed by burial in Holy Trinity Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial gifts to Boy Scouts of America Troop 36 at Holy Family Catholic Church.
