Betty Beckort Tufts

Betty Beckort Tufts, 69, Hilton Head Island, S.C., died Monday, July 6, 2009, at Broad Creek Care Center of TidePointe after a six-year battle against non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Born Aug. 1, 1939, in Laconia, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Ferne Pittman Beckort.
She was a graduate of the old Laconia High School, earned her bachelor’s and Master of Science degrees from Indiana University, where, as a senior, she was secretary of the Student Foundation Steering Committee, the group which conducted the annual Little 500 bicycle race, an event popularized through the movie ‘Breaking Away.’ She joined the staff at Bucknell University in July 1964 as an assistant dean of women and served two years as a guidance counselor at Shikellamy Middle School in Sunbury, Pa., and, in 1974, worked as a guidance counselor at Lewisburg Area High School. In 1988, she joined the admissions staff at Bucknell and retired from there as senior associate director of admissions. She received Bucknell’s Walter C. Geiger Award for Administrative Excellence in 1998, was a volunteer with the Deep Well Project, the Bargain Box, the Boys & Girls Club, Friends With Wheels and Literacy Volunteers of the Low Country, and was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, where she chaired the Supper Club committee and was on the committee that conducted the annual All Saints Garden Tour.
Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Brad; two daughters, Suzanne of Cincinnati and Allison Utecht of Malvern, Pa.; a sister, Marilyn Lee; a brother, Paul Beckort; and six grandchildren.
Celebration of life service: Saturday, July 11, at 11 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church on Hilton Head Island.
A memorial service will be held in Lewisburg, Pa., later this summer.
