Recent North Harrison High School graduate Kayla Lambert received All-State honors in softball. The shortstop was a Third Team All-State selection, making the third time in her career she has been recognized on the state level.
After her sophomore year, Lambert was named honorable mention, and her junior year led to a Second Team All-State selection.
‘I put in lots of years of hard work,’ she said.
Not only was Lambert recognized as an All-State performer, she participated in the North-South Classic All-Star game last weekend at Ben Davis High School.
Lambert represented the South, who dropped the first game, 4-2, but bounced back to win game two, 5-2.
The All-Star Most Valuable Player was Audrey Ernst from Edgewood High School. Jenny Esparza (Avon) was named 2009 Miss Softball.
‘It was a blast playing with a bunch of girls I never knew before,’ Lambert said. ‘It was with a lot of great players, but it was really so much fun to play.’
Lambert arrived on Friday, the day before the game, for a practice and meeting with team members. On game day, the team took pictures and played a doubleheader.
‘My first at bat, it was intimidating because they threw hard and threw everything, but it was a challenge,’ Lambert said.
She met the challenge, connecting for a hit in three plate appearances. Lambert eventually scored, helping the South win the second game.
Rosters were made up of 21 players, and the batting lineup went through all 21 and back around. Lambert was one of three shortstops who played the position every third inning.
‘She did herself very well,’ North Harrison softball coach and Kayla’s father, John Lambert, said. ‘She made some really nice plays in the field.’
Lambert will attend the University of Southern Indiana in the fall.
‘As of right now, I may try to walk on,’ Lambert said of playing softball at the college level.
