Nellie M. Felker

Nellie May Smith Felker, 99, formerly of New Salisbury, died Monday, June 8, 2009, at Indian Creek Health & Rehabilitation Center in Corydon.
orn May 1, 1910, in Dubois County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Lucretia Walls Smith.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in teaching from Indiana State University and a master’s degree from Indiana University and, in her early years, taught in several one- and two-room schools. She retired from teaching after more than 40 years in 1973. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Salem Business and Professional Women’s Club, Salem Chapter of Sweet Adelines, Hoosier Heritage Homemakers Club and New Salisbury United Methodist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Smith and Lois F. Engleman, and three brothers, Ivan, Otto and Lee Smith.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, George M. Felker.
Visitation: Wednesday, June 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, June 11, after 9 a.m. at Swarens Funeral Home in Ramsey.
Funeral: Thursday, June 11, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with burial in Birdseye Cemetery.
