Trio escape from Branchville prison
Three inmates, including one arrested last year in Harrison County who is serving a 20-year sentence for burglary, escaped Friday from Branchville Correctional Facility in northeastern Perry County.
The inmates ‘ Bobby Cockerell, Christopher Marshall and Jerry Sargent ‘ were last accounted for at about 9:15 Friday morning and are believed to have stolen a truck in St. Croix, about five miles north of the prison, early Sunday morning and driven to northern Kentucky.
The truck, a 1989 Ford F-250, was reported missing shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday and found later that day abandoned on Interstate 71 in Kentucky about 30 miles south of Cincinnati.
The trio are then believed to have broken into a Carroll County, Ky., home and assaulted and bound three men before stealing cash, 10 weapons, including a handgun and rifle, and a faded-green 1998 Ford Ranger with Kentucky licence plate 7824BZ.
Marshall and Sargent were assigned to the welding shop at the Branchville prison, designated by the Indiana Department of Correction as a medium-security facility, and are believed to have been involved in the assault of a maintenance worker prior to their escape. The maintenance worker was airlifted to University Hospital in Louisville.
The three prisoners are thought to have stolen a pair of pliers to cut the prison’s fence.
