Walter E. Atwood

Walter Edward Atwood, 87, Leavenworth, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at 5:30 a.m. at St. Catherine Regional Hospital in Charlestown.
Born July 17, 1921, in Crawford County, he was the son of the late James Edward Atwood and Anna Belle Sheckells.
He was a World War II Army veteran who received four Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart, a retired professional fisherman and attended Pilgrim Holiness Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Russ W. Atwood; a brother, Willard Atwood; and a sister, Celia Belle Shelton.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, the former Edith Summers; four children, Cassie May Barnum of Depauw and Bennie L., Carl Rodney and Samuel Edward Atwood, all of Milltown; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Thursday, Jan. 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday, Jan. 23, after 9 a.m. at Dillman-Green Funeral Home in Marengo.
Funeral: Friday, Jan 23, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home followed by burial in East Cemetery.
Officiant: Brother Marvin Culver.
