Joseph B. Zirnheld
Joseph B. Zirnheld, 82, New Albany, formerly of Corydon, died Friday morning, Oct. 10, 2008, at his home.
Born Dec. 29, 1925, in Louisville, he was a Marine Corps veteran during World War II, served as a military policeman in the Air Force, earning the rank of sergeant, then spent the rest of his career with the Louisville Fire Dept., earning the rank of captain prior to becoming a drill master training new recruits until his retirement in 1978.
He was preceded in death by his parents, several siblings and his former wife of 34 years, Bette Zirnheld-Johns.
Survivors include three children, Holly Faris, Valorie Cooper and Jeffrey D. Zirnheld; two children he helped rear, Martha Heishman and Angie Huffman; three brothers; four sisters; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
His body was donated to the University of Louisville Medical School for scientific research.
A celebration of life memorial will be held later.
The family suggests memorial gifts to the American Cancer Society or to Hosparus of Southern Indiana.
