Cougar boys claim county cross country
North Harrison and Corydon Central pulled out team titles at Thursday’s Harrison County Cross Country Meet in Lanesville.
A tight pack helped Corydon Central win the girls’ team honors with 38 points. The Lady Panthers locked up positions seven through 10, using the consistent effort pay-off. While the teams battled for positioning, South Central’s Rachel Pease ran off with the individual honors, completing the race in 21:32.
Janae Smith led Corydon Central in seventh with a time of 24:46. Eighth place went to Olivia Wiseman (25:08), ninth was Caitlyn Byrd (25:29) and 10th was Conner McKiever (25:34).
Also picking up top-20 finishes for the Lady Panthers were Molly Pitts (14th, 26:07), Courtney Helton (16th, 26:37) and Stacey Miller (19th, 29:01).
North Harrison’s girls finished second with 40 points, just two behind Corydon Central. Kasey Cox led North Harrison with a third-place finish with a time of 23:01. Finishing fourth for the Lady Cats was Tori Moberly with a time of 23:20. Cassie Crawford out-sprinted South Central’s Erica Coulter to the finish line to take 11th place. Also with solid runs for North Harrison were Jenna Waiz (13th, 25:51), Samantha Taylor (15th, 26:34), Kelly Naegle (17th, 26:54) and Nisa Moss (20th, 29:45).
South Central took third place with 48 points. The team was led by Pease’s first-place effort. Behind Pease was teammate Shelby Miller, who took second with a time of 22:38.
Also running to top-20 finishes were Erica Coulter (12th, 25:39) and Megan Sherrard (18th, 27:31).
Lanesville was led by Rachel Butler and Miranda Kaake. Butler crossed the finish line in fourth place with a time of 23:05, and Kaake was sixth in 24:32. The duo were the only ones to compete for Lanesville, who turned in an incomplete team score.
In the boys’ race, Corydon Central’s Harrison Mann seems to get stronger as the season progresses. The senior won the event in 17:47.
However, North Harrison was able to pull out the team title with 31 points. The Cougars were without standout Tyler Byrne, who cheered his teammates while he nurses an injury. The injury won’t keep him out of the post-season meets.
The Cougars were led to the top finish behind third- and fourth-place finishes from Chris Foster and Johnnie Guy. Foster finished with a time of 18:20 and Guy 18:24. The team put five runners in the top 10 with Foster and Guy including Peter Book (sixth, 18:43), Christian Horstman (eighth, 18:55) and Matt Bruce (10th, 19:35).
Corydon Central was led by Mann’s first-place finish and second-place finisher Cheyenne Smith. Smith completed the course in 18:02.
Rounding out the Panthers’ team scoring were Luke Burch (ninth, 19:24), Ryan Hutchinson (13th, 20:07) and Casey Priddy (14th, 20:08).
South Central took third place with 65 points. The team was led by John Lopp’s strong performance. He finished the meet in seventh place with a time of 18:54. Filling out the Rebels’ scoring were Nick Soots (11th, 19:45), Clinton Coulter (12th, 19:53), Chris O’Connor (17th, 20:39) and Cody Roby (18th, 20:44).
Lanesville was fourth overall with 93 points. Joe Kissel led the Eagles with a fifth-place finish with a time of 18:34. Rounding out the Eagles’ team scoring were Vince Cecil (16th, 20:26), Aaron Borders (26th, 21:36), Austin Brown (29th, 21:48) and Cody Coke (30th, 21:54).
In the junior high boys’ race, North Harrison’s Jonathan Reynolds was first overall with a time of 9:41. Lanesville won the team scoring with 35 points followed by Corydon Central (39), North Harrison (69) and South Central (77).
The junior high girls’ race was won by Corydon Central’s Sydney Pickman with a time of 12:29. North Harrison finished first as a team with 40 points, followed by Corydon Central (46), Lanesville (69) and South Central (75). St. John’s competed in both races but didn’t record a team score.
