All four county teams fell short Thursday and Friday in an attempt to knock off boys’ tennis powers New Albany and Floyd Central in sectional play.
South Central carried strong singles play to a 3-2 win over Corydon Central to reach the sectional final.
Against Corydon Central, singles players Micah Decker, Wesley Hedden and Corey Dennison each picked up wins. Decker defeated Chad Conrad in No. 1 7-5, 6-2; Hedden knocked off Chris Day 6-1, 6-0; and Dennison topped Adam Bichir 6-0, 6-1.
Corydon Central was dominant on the doubles court. The team of Brian Baker and Doug Pope defeated Clinton Linkmeyer and Zach Seelye 6-0, 6-0 and Jacob Schneider and Kenny Gerdon defeated Mark O’Connor and Jake LaClair 6-0, 6-1.
The season for the Baker-Pope duo doesn’t end. The two played in the individual regional yesterday (Tuesday) against the doubles team from Silver Creek. Corydon Central coach Jeff Smitley said he liked his team’s chances.
In the New Albany Sectional final, the host Bulldogs had little trouble with South Central, winning the title 5-0.
Alex Stewart won No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Decker. Bulldog Christian Meyer defeated Hedden 6-0, 6-0, and Jeremy Juliot ousted Dennison with a 6-1, 6-0 win. In doubles play, Stephen Kraft and Alec Kerr defeated the Linkmeyer-Seelye duo 6-1, 6-1, and in No. 2 doubles, Jacob Zirnheld and Luke Garmon defeated O’Connor-LaClair 6-0, 6-0.
New Albany reached the final by taking down gritty Lanesville 5-0.
Stewart defeated No. 1 singles player Cameron Teeter 6-1, 6-3. In No. 2 singles, Meyer took down Chris Ehalt 6-3, 6-0. And in No. 3 singles, Jordan Sizemore fell to Juliot 6-0, 6-2.
On the doubles court, Kraft-Kerr beat brothers Nick and Jeffrey Hammond 6-0, 6-2 in No. 1, and in No. 2, Zirnheld-Garmon defeated Bradley Wright and Ryan Wernert 6-2, 6-2.
North Harrison also had a tough draw, facing host Floyd Central on Thursday. Floyd Central, who went on to win the sectional, defeated the Cougars with ease. The powerful Highlanders allowed just four points over five matches.
Floyd Central’s Ben Boesing defeated Brian Kepley in No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-2. Alec Dones was able to snag a few points in No. 3 singles, falling to Geordie Crone 6-0, 6-2. In the No. 2 singles, Adam Struble defeated Will Jones 6-0, 6-0. On the doubles courts, Floyd Central’s Evan Winders and Brad Emerson were 6-0, 6-0 winners over Sean Drury and Bryce Nowak in the No. 1 match. In No. 2, Luke Schreiber and Ryan Smith defeated Dakota Bosler and Lincoln Jones 6-0, 6-0.
