Scott Vogles celebrates on the hood of his car after winning the Big Car Cage Match Monday.

Sledgehammers were hard at work in the infield Monday, banging out bodies of various models of demolition derby cars in preparation for the Mini Car feature event at the Harrison County Fair.
Twenty cars took to the track in Corydon in hopes of taking home the $1,000 first-place prize in the Mini Car series.
In the feature event, the mayhem started early and was often. Cory Logsdon and Michael Rhoads didn’t hold back much, ripping through the competition until they were the final two standing. Both cars became tangled together after they eliminated third-place finisher Patrick Rankin.
Once Logsdon and Rhoads split, the crowd was sent into an uproar, but Rhoads had more left in the motor than his counterpart. Rhoads circled several stranded cars, then landed the final blow with his front end, mangling Logsdon’s right front. With Logsdon’s No. 82 headed up in smoke, Rhoads celebrated the feature win in his black-and-white No. 37 car.
Rhoads bounced back after a rough heat race to survive the consolation heat, advancing him to the finals.
Survivors of the first heat were Jason Morgan, Gary Lowe Jr. and Logsdon. The top three from the second heat were Chris Stepro, Nathan Coffey and Jessica Wright. Four drivers went on from the consolation race, including William Saltsgaver, PJ Logsdon, Patrick Rankin and Rhoads.
Saltsgaver took home the prettiest car competition with his bright pink car. He won with a large contingent of fans screaming during the judging, which was based on audience applause.
Monday also featured a Big Car Cage Match. The event drew just three competitors, but wasn’t short of crunching hits. Scott Vogles outlasted Mark Scott and Franklin Heishman to take the top prize.
The Demolition Derby returns tomorrow night (Thursday) for the Big Car Derby at 7:30. Also during the event, the ever-popular Rollover Contest, sponsored by Harrison REMC, will take place before the feature event.
