Eleven of the 16 teams that will make up the Floyd Central boys’ golf sectional in two weeks met Saturday at Hidden Creek Golf Club, including North Harrison, Corydon Central and Lanesville, in an attempt to gauge where teams stood.
North Harrison fared the best among area teams, firing a 319 team score, good for fifth place among 12 teams at the Southern Indiana Open in Sellersburg. Three Cougars had exceptional days, including Dylan Spencer. The junior placed seventh overall as an individual with a five-over-par 75. Spencer had a fairly even day, shooting a 38 on the front nine and 37 on the backside.
Fellow juniors Matt Bruce and Chris Worrall finished in 11th place, one shot back of Spencer with 76s. Rounding out the North Harrison scorers were sophomores Daniel Matthews and Nick Morris, both shooting 92s.
A young squad ‘ three sophomores and two freshmen ‘ took to the course for Corydon Central. Cody Warmuth led the young golfers. The sophomore finished tied with Spencer, carding a 75. The Panthers finished eighth overall, combining for 352. Also scoring for Corydon Central were freshman Ryan Coffman (91), sophomore Josh Faulkenburg (91), freshman Conor Whooley (95) and sophomore Michael Merk (101).
Lanesville, also with a young squad, placed 12th overall with a 403. Junior Ryan Wernert put in a round at 97 to lead the Eagles. Wernert was followed by sophomore Andy Glomb’s 98, junior David Kaufer’s 102 and junior Bradley Wright’s 106.
Sectional favorite Floyd Central finished first overall with a 297. Providence (304) and Silver Creek (307) finished a solid second and third, respectively. With the top three teams at sectional moving to regional, North Harrison has some work to do in catching up with the favorites.
Silver Creek’s Brandon White was medalist with a one-over-par 71.
This weekend, the Mid-Southern Conference meet will take place at 8 a.m. at Wooded View Golf Course, and the Southern Athletic Conference meet will take place at 2 p.m. at Champion’s Point Golf Course.
