Heavy rains took over the area Friday afternoon and lasted well into the early morning hours of Saturday. While the Old Capitol Invitational in Corydon was washed out because of the rains, a squeegee didn’t deny the Harrison County Tennis Tournament from taking place Saturday at North Harrison High School.
The host Lady Cats had little trouble defending the tournament they don’t seem to lose. For the 14th consecutive year, North Harrison won the county tournament, this time sweeping all five finals matches in girls’ tennis.
With the five victories, North Harrison combined for 25 team points, followed by a scrum for second between Corydon Central (11 points), Lanesville (eight) and South Central (six).
The meet was initially scheduled for April 19, but was pushed back due to prom weekend for some schools. The delay didn’t seem to affect North Harrison.
The Lady Cats appeared most impressive on the double court, with both county champs becoming repeat winners. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Kelsey Jacobi and Micaela Napper handily defeated South Central’s Jodie Spencer and Morgan Boston 6-0, 6-0.
It was much of the same on the No. 2 doubles court. In the finals, Lady Cats’ duo Becca Dean and Katie Reed nearly pulled a perfect match, defeating South Central’s Anna Loos and Natasha Smith 6-0, 6-1.
Taking the consolation matches in No. 1 doubles were Megan Benton and Olivia Reilly from Corydon Central, defeating Lanesville’s Alana Umensetter and Heather Cooper 9-7, and in No. 2 doubles, Lanesville’s Rachel Riley and Jenna Walter defeated Taylor Kellem and Leah Wieckowski from Corydon Central 8-3. All consolation matches were played pro-set style, a one-set race to eight points by two games.
In No. 1 singles action, North Harrison’s Wynn Shroyer knocked off Corydon Central’s Jorie Newell 6-1, 6-2. In No. 2 singles, Maggie Cassity defeated Lady Panther Kylie Hall 6-2, 6-3. Picking up her second consecutive county title at No. 3 singles, Caitlyn Janes defeated Corydon Central’s Heather Uhl 6-2, 6-4.
In consolation matches, Lanesville’s Caroline Turcotte defeated South Central’s Josephine vanNiew-wehazen 8-1 in No. 1 singles; Lanesville’s Nicole Melton defeated South Central’s Katie Saylor 8-3 in No. 2 singles, and in No. 3 singles, Lanesville’s LeAnne Myers defeated Jessica Schreck 9-8.
All four teams will now gear toward sectional play that begins May 15. The draw will take place May 12. North Harrison will participate in the Floyd Central Sectional while Corydon Central, Lanesville and South Central will play in the New Albany Sectional.
