Brown faces challenge by Mathes for clerk

Harrison County Circuit Court Clerk Sherry Brown is being challenged by Barbara J. Mathes. Both are unopposed in next month’s primary election but will appear on the Nov. 4 ballot. Brown is a Republican, and Mathes is a Democrat. Here is a look at both candidates.
Sherry L. Brown
Address: Corydon
Spouse: Randy Brown (23 years)
Children: Sharon, Isaac and Shane
Occupation: Circuit Court Clerk
School and year graduated: South Central, 1984
Additional education:
Political affiliation: Republican
Previous political experience: Four years circuit court clerk
Duties of position sought: Record keeping of all court documents, marriage and probate documents, passport application acceptance, election administration.
Why are you seeking the office? I am seeking this office to continue the public services my staff and I have begun: the passport service, the computerization of the office and the generation of additional revenue.
What qualifies you for the office? The qualifications that I have for the office are my past four years of experience and my friendly, young aggressive attitude of thinking outside the box.
What do you consider the top issues in the campaign? The top issue in this campaign is the continuing modernization of the office.
What problems, if any, does the circuit court clerk’s office face? The main problem is modernizing while continuing to bring additional revenue into the county general fund.
How would you help to resolve those problems? I plan to resolve that problem by continuing to acquire grants to attain state-of-the-art equipment for the office at no charge to the county and continuing the current initiatives which have generated over a half a million dollars in the past for years above and beyond the revenue brought in, in previous years.
What changes, if any, would you make in the circuit court clerk’s office to save taxpayers money and streamline the work? The main change that I foresee is the implementation of the computerized court case management system.
