Melvin E. Buchanan

Melvin E. Buchanan, 87, Mitchell, formerly of Crawford County, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at 2:50 p.m. at Bedford Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 11, 1920, in Orange County, he was the son of the late John and Alice Bennett Buchanan.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, a farmer, a construction worker, retired from Mulzer Crushed Stone and a member of Spice Valley Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Alice Bernice Mosson, in April 2000; a brother, Loren Buchanan; and a sister, Maymie Giammanco.
Survivors include his wife, the former Pearl Thompson Deckard; two sons, Larry Melvin Buchanan of Paoli and David Eugene Buchanan of English; two daughters, Patty Jean Landreth of Salem and Sheila Yvonne Buchanan of Taswell; six stepdaughters, Regina Sorrells and Diana Kay Webb, both of Mitchell, Nedra Hardwick and Kim Dorsett, both of Bedford, Geni Clouse of Palm Coast, Fla., and Marlena Swartz of Mitchell; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Thursday, Jan. 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday, Jan. 25, after 11 a.m. at Chastain Funeral Home in Mitchell.
Funeral: Friday, Jan. 25, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with burial in Paoli Community Cemetery.
Officiant: The Revs. Lewis Williams and Carl Brown.
Military honors: Conducted by Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9107.
