SH fills speech therapist vacancy

The vote to hire Hannah Wallace as a speech therapist at the Harrison County Exceptional Learners Cooperative was less than unanimous at the Nov. 6 meeting of the South Harrison Community School Corp. Board of Trustees at South Central Junior-Senior High School.
Bruce Kulwicki, assistant director for the Cooperative, said the position had been open for six years and that Wallace was a suitable hire in what he described as an ’emergency’ situation.
‘If we don’t do something now, I think we could lose this girl,’ said Dr. Beverley Garrison, director of the Cooperative. ‘We’ve advertised for a position through The Courier-(Journal), The (Corydon) Democrat, on Web sites, through referrals and have exhausted every avenue available to us. She wants to work here.
‘With the workload that we have, we really need two people. But getting her would be sufficient for now.’
After a lengthy discussion about the educational background and whether or not the position needed to be filled, Carol Uesseler and Roger Windell voted against the hire, with Joyce Bliss, Bill Fleace, Larry Hauswald, Dr. John Gonzaba and Jeffery Brown giving their approval.
‘I think having a position open for six years is long enough,’ Brown said later.
In another personnel matter, Jeremy Ledford moved from a part-time to full-time industrial technology teacher at Corydon Central High School, filling the void left by the resignation of Grant Richards.
The industrial technology position received attention this spring by retiring teacher Randall Coleman, who believed the program would be dropped by the school corporation.
‘No classes were dropped after (Randall) left. In fact, it was simply a reallocation of classes,’ said Assistant Supt. Jeff Hauswald. ‘We dropped two periods of classes, then moved the remaining students into a different period or offering of the same class.’
Business director Carolyn Wallace gave a brief summary of the construction project going on at Heth-Washington Elementary School, pointing out that the septic system had been replaced, the footers were poured and all construction items were on-site and progressing normally.
With Supt. Neyland Clark in New York to visit his son, Joe, who recently returned from the war in Iraq, Hauswald made a presentation regarding the Division of Compensatory Education Requirements and Planning and how SHCSC was focusing on its curriculum mapping efforts.
The South Central Junior-Senior High School choir, directed by Rhonda Brown, gave a musical presentation made up of patriotic music, offering a preview of a concert it was giving the following night.
