Media interest continues in Harrison County offerings
Harrison County continues to hold interest for magazines and news sources, as indicated by a staff report at Monday’s board meeting of the Harrison County Tourism Commission.
Sherry Watson, marketing manager of the Convention and Visitors Bureau, said in her report for last month that James Baggett, a writer for Better Homes and Gardens, was here June 18 through 21 to take in a tour of area gardens. He visited some gardens featured in the Hosta tour the week prior to his visit.
Jim Brewer, a writer for the Ashland Times-Gazette and the Loudonville newspaper, both in Ohio, has expressed interest in coming to Harrison County in August to do a story on caves in the area, Watson said.
Also at Monday’s meeting, it was reported that the total investment for ‘leisure media’ in June was $106,557, which included festival and events advertising. The primary markets include Indianapolis and Louisville, with secondary markets including other Indiana and Kentucky counties.
The group media campaigns, which centers around trade show dates, included direct mail postcards to be sent out to tour operators with itinerary ideas localized to Harrison County. One such group tour direct mail postcard was sent out the week of June 18.
The HCCVB agreed to pay approximately half the cost for team tourism members to have their businesses listed in the 2008-2009 Indiana Travel Guide. This was done in place of the usual half-page display ad.
In other Convention and Visitors Bureau news, some of its staff, including Watson, Jeremy Yackle and executive director Jim Epperson, are attending the 93rd annual Destination Marketing Association International convention this week in Pittsburgh. The convention focuses on education and networking within destination marketing.
Before departing for Pennsylvania, the CVB staff was busy relocating its offices from Elm Street to North Capitol Avenue, in upstairs space of the Emporium building. The next tourism commission meeting will be held in the new CVB administrative offices on Aug. 13 at 4 p.m.
