Depauw woman dies in single-car crash
A Depauw woman was killed late Friday night after her car left the road, struck a tree and caught on fire.
Tracey Jo Stinson, 37, was traveling west on S.R. 64 when she ran off the left side of the road about 10:30 p.m. near Wetzel Drive west of S.R. 337, according to Officer Kevin Taylor of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Dept.
The 2003 Subaru Impreza traveled almost 348 feet before striking a culvert, which caused the four-door wagon to flip over and hit a tree, Taylor said. The car then caught fire, he said.
Crawford County dispatch first received the call for help from someone using a cell phone, Taylor said, but poor cell service made it difficult for dispatchers to initially determine the location. Also, the caller indicated that the crash involved a vehicle and a train, but Taylor said that turned out to be false.
‘There’s no way, based on where the car was, that a train was involved,’ Taylor said.
Stinson, who lived on the Harrison County side of Milltown, was wearing a seat belt, Taylor said.
Harrison County Coroner Steve Hamm, who pronounced Stinson dead at the scene, said the crash is still under investigation. An autopsy was performed Saturday, but Hamm would not release any information Monday afternoon.
Firefighters from both Milltown and Ramsey Volunteer Fire departments, responded as did EMS personnel from Harrison County Hospital in Corydon. Besides Taylor and other officers from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Dept., Milltown Police Dept. and Crawford County Sheriff’s Dept. also responded.
Traffic on S.R. 64 was shut down for about three hours because of the crash.
