Lanesville edges Lady Rebs, eyes rematch vs. Henryville

Monday night’s Class 1A Lanesville sectional semi-final battle between the host club and arch-rival South Central had more twists and turns than a day in the life of Jack Bauer from the hit TV series, ’24.’
Minus the explosions, of course.
The three-time defending sectional champion Lady Eagles (which advanced to the state final the past two seasons) went up by two runs early, saw the game tied, fell behind, tied it, fell behind, then tied it again before finally emerging with a victory over arch-rival South Central in the bottom of the eighth inning, 7-6.
The game-winning run came via the legs of junior Beth Glomb, who reached on an infield single, stole second and third, then dashed home when a Justine Huffman pitch got away from battery-mate Christian Clem.
‘Our base running was excellent tonight and probably the reason we won the game. We work on our base running for probably 40 minutes every day. Some teams don’t do that, but we do. And tonight it paid off,’ Lanesville coach Kayla Straub said.
After holding the Lady Rebels (1-18) scoreless in the opening frame, No. 12-ranked Lanesville drew first blood.
Junior Allison Wolfe bunted for a single, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball, then stole home for the early advantage.
Neither club scored in the second, but Lanesville came through with a run in the bottom of the third as Erin Dorgay was driven in by Lady Eagle pitcher Ashley Royalty for a 2-0 lead.
South tied the affair in the top of the fourth.
After Brittany Hornickel reached on an error and Candice Cartwright punched a single, Brittany Schoen came through with a shot to left that was muffed, allowing two runs to come across.
Lanesville (11-11) got one of those back in the bottom of the inning after Aimee Parsons singled and went to second on a passed ball. A one-out single by Jill Lewis drove her teammate in for a 3-2 lead.
The Lady Rebels came back with two more runs in the fifth when Huffman was driven in on a double by Paige Kingsley, and Kingsley coming across on a bloop single by Hornickel.
Lanesville tied it again when Dorgay doubled, stole second and scored on a passed ball.
After a scoreless sixth, the Lady Rebels punched their final two runs in the top of the seventh: Hornickel reached on an error and Amelia Foreman reached on a fielder’s choice. With two outs, Schoen came through with a two-RBI single for a 6-4 lead.
The Lady Eagles’ deficit was short-lived, however.
Dorgay led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple, Erin Harbeson walked and Royalty singled to load the bases. Parsons slapped a hit to right for two RBI to tie the game at 6-6, setting up Glomb’s game winner in the 8th.
n Lanesville battles Henryville (18-5) at 5 p.m. today (Wednesday) in a rematch of last year’s sectional final, which the Lady Eagles won, 6-3.
