Floyd runners top NH, Crawford

Floyd Central’s boys and girls track teams swept their three-way meet with North Harrison and Crawford County last Tuesday afternoon as Mother Nature finally gave the teams a warm, dry day to compete after several meets had been canceled due to rain, snow and cold.
‘Out of seven meets we’ve had four canceled,’ said Crawford junior Lauren Schaftlein. ‘It’s been crazy.’
North Harrison’s Tyler Byrne looked at the situation with a little different perspective.
‘I don’t think it’s hurting us too bad because it’s been like that for everybody I’ve been talking to,’ he said. ‘I’ve been getting extra practices. My times have been maybe a little bit slower. I’m sure the competition helps everybody. I think the times are getting to where they should be.’
In the girls field events Floyd Central’s Carlye Roth was a double winner in the shot-put and the discus throw. In the high jump, North Harrison’s Ramona Taylor, who’s only 5-4, cleared the bar at 5 feet even to earn the first place spot. Taylor has been working with former Crawford jumper Travis Beals who has the Wolfpack record of 6 feel, 11 inches.
‘He helps me a lot,’ said Taylor of Beals. ‘I think fairly everything I do is fairly okay. I need to start jumping straight up more instead of into the bar. Other than that it’s pretty good. I haven’t got over any other heights yet. I’m trying.’
Taylor said she’s pushes herself both mentally and when she’s going to the bar.
‘What goes through my head is I can do it,’ she said. ‘Just do it. Get it over with. If you go slow it’s hard to get over it. When it’s faster you get more pop to it.’
Just a freshman, Taylor said she has some goals but also tried to keep things in reality.
‘At least 5-4,’ she said of one goal. ‘I want to get 5-4 and break our record at school. I don’t set my goals too high right now because I don’t know what I can do yet.’
The Floyd boys swept all their field events except one. The first running event, however, belonged to North Harrison in the 3200-meter relay where the Cougars cruised to first in 9:13. In the girls 3200-meter relay the Crawford girls team easily won their event in 11:30.
Byrne won the boys 1600-meter and 3200-meter distance events.
‘This is only our third meet so it’s been kind of a rough year,’ said Byrne after the 1600 in a time of 4:51. ‘I felt pretty tired today. I ran a 4:42 on Saturday. I’m pretty pleased today.’
In the boys 800-meter run it was North Harrison’s Christian Horstman to come in first for the Cougars. Horstman finished his race in 2:20.
‘Cross country helps a little bit,’ Horstman said after his win. ‘You call it the cross country kick. It was coming down to about a hundred yards left and you had people saying he was catching up so I pretty much gave it all I could. It was tiring just getting done with the 400. I got my PR in that and felt pretty good but starting out I just had to stay with them.’
North Harrison coach Ty Guillaume is putting Horstman in several events to help get him in shape.
Schaftlein said she is looking forward to this Friday’s North Harrison Invitational so her team can get back into the rhythm they like.
‘I’m hoping to do good at that one,’ Schaftlein said. ‘Hopefully we won’t have any meets canceled in between there so we can have something we can actually do. All of this not having meets, the whole team is trying to get back into it. You’re not having one and then you’re all lazy…Warming up is different.’
