Marshall stays at SC; Crisp goes corporate

South Central Junior-Senior High School lost a principal, then gained one, at last week’s South Harrison Community School Corp. Board of Trustees meeting.
Assistant principal Keith Marshall was appointed as the new principal at South Central Junior-Senior High School, replacing James Crisp, who shifts to the corporation office as Director of Technology.
Both moves are effective July 1.
Marshall was hired into the corporation in 1998 at Corydon Central Junior High, teaching both health and physical education and multimedia.
In addition to his teaching duties, he coached junior high golf and junior high girls basketball.
He moved from CCJH to South Central in 2004 to become South’s assistant principal, a position he’s held for three years, and athletic director, a position he held for two years.
‘I feel Mr. Crisp set a clear direction where we needed to be as a school, and I feel I can continue that process with the staff at South Central. We are almost all on the same page and we are only going to get better with continuous help and support from Mr. Crisp and Central Office,’ Marshall said.
‘It will be really hard to fill Mr. Crisp’s shoes because he has been very good for this school and community,’ Marshall said. ‘I know the staff will really miss him and so will I. He has been an outstanding leader and administrator. He did things the right way and I hope to continue to build what he has established at SCHS. He will be a nice addition to the Central office and will provide an excellent perspective on secondary issues and concerns.’
In another matter, South Central Elementary principal Laura McDermott was joined by SHCS counselors in a presentation about bullying, offering up several statistics from local schools to further back a bullying guideline proposal.
At the middle and high school levels, more than 50 percent of SHCS students have been bullied, and 66 percent of those bullied had the encounter either at school or on a bus. Most of the students told either parents or friends but were not reporting the incidents to school officials.
More than 50 percent of those bullied admitted to being a bully themselves.
In grades two through five, 60 percent of students had been bullied either at recess or on a school bus.
Supt. Dr. Neyland Clark said he ‘absolutely’ supported a partnership between the SHCS and Community Unity, which also had representatives at the meeting.
Community Unity’s purpose is to promote projects that enhance ‘peaceable understanding between persons of diverse backgrounds.’
Among its mission statements is, ‘We will teach our youth to uphold the dignity of all.’
In another matter, Gordon Ingle, who serves as legal counsel for the Harrison County Alternative Education Center, was joined by Doug Dodge, assistant principal at North Harrison High School and president of the alternative school board of directors, in a presentation about the school, attempting to get an AEC appointment from SHCS.
The center is expanding its board from five members to 12 to 15, with the school corporations’ board of trustees at Lanesville, South Harrison and North Harrison each appointing a representative who can report back to them about the alternative school’s progress.
‘This is our last stop on our tour, if you will,’ Ingle said, ‘and we are here because we want the board to consider its appointment to the alternative school.’
Ingle, a graduate of a form of alternative school himself, added, ‘I wouldn’t be an attorney today if it weren’t for an alternative school. Every child in Harrison County deserves this opportunity.
‘This is for the future of Harrison County children.’
In another matter, the board approved the transfer of bus route 24 (Ruth Watson) to Sherry Reed and the transfer of route 22 (Jerry Reed/Sherry Reed) to Ruth Watson.
Some of the boards new business items included:
‘ Approval of installation of baseball field lighting in the amount of $122,100 by Star Electric, Inc.;
‘ Approval of summer programs, classes for credit and enrichment for 2007 for elementary school, junior high school and high school;
‘ Approval of an early intervention program for students who will be in kindergarten at the start of the 2007-2008 school year, with the program lasting three hours a day for four days, and further that riverboat interest funds subsidize this component of summer programs;
‘ Approval of recommendation to use riverboat interest funds to pay $99.50 of the enrollment costs for the first 100 South Harrison students enrolled in Camp Invention, a summer enrichment option; and
‘ Approval of contract with Jaime Hammond for Speech Pathologist services.
In a final matter, the full, seven-member board approved several personnel recommendations. They were, by school buildings:
