Corydon 7th-, 8th-graders sweep NH for junior high county titles
Due to last week’s icy conditions postponing several girls basketball sectionals, the Harrison County Junior High Tournament was pushed back four days.
Corydon Central’s 7th- and 8th-grade boys basketball teams found the wait worth while as they swept North Harrison on Monday night at Lanesville.
The 7th graders set the tone for the night with a 32-26 victory, which was followed by a CC thrashing of North in the 8th grade game, 63-33.
In the nightcap, Brandon Dunaway pumped in 22 points and Seth Rennirt added 18 for the winners, who finished a nearly perfect campaign at 19-1.
‘They won the Salem Tourney to start the year and they’ve worked hard to get better and better. I couldn’t be happier for this bunch,’ Corydon coach Mike Biddle said.
Sparked by a combined 16 first-half points by Dunaway and Tyler Jones, Corydon led 12-7 at the first stop, then extended the advantage to 29-16 by halftime.
The third quarter ended with the Panthers up, 45-29, before blowing the contest open in the final period.
North’s Lincoln Jones scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half, and Dylan Janes added seven.
The 7th-grade battle saw North jump out 4-0, only to be outscored on a 12-3 run to the first horn.
The flurry of points by the Panthers was all the team needed to pull off the win.
Jordan Crosier led all scorers with 16 points, followed by Tyler Shewmaker’s eight.
North was paced by the nine points of Collin Book and four by Zachary Shearer.
The all-county teams are as follows: 8th grade ‘ Dunaway, Rennirt (CC), Janes, Jones (NH), Joe Kissel (L), Nick Bennett (SC); 7th grade ‘ Crosier, Shewmaker (CC), Book, Alex Rutherford (NH), Caleb Caldwell (L), Nick Soots (SC).
