David M. Koerner, 57, Blue Ridge, Ga., died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, at Fannin Regional Hospital in Georgia after suffering a heart attack.
Born in Clark County on Dec. 27, 1948, he attended Lanesville schools for 11 years and graduated from New Albany High School. He was a 1970 graduate of Indiana University.
Koerner retired in December as a sports reporter at The Courier-Journal and Louisville Times after 33 years, then moved to Blue Ridge to take a position as a reporter for The News Observer newspaper. During his tenure at the Louisville newspapers he covered 27 of the last 28 Kentucky Oaks and 23 consecutive Indianapolis 500 races. In 1984, he won an Eclipse Award for a profile of jockey Angel Cordero. While at The News Observer, he won a national award for a feature about a baptism at the county jail.
He attended Blue Ridge First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Crystal Cooke Koerner; two daughters, Mindy Koerner of New Albany and Suzanne Pruitt of Jeffersonville; a son, Michael Koerner of Edinburgh, Scotland; a stepson, Patrick Cooke of Blue Ridge; a stepdaughter, Alexis Cooke of Blue Ridge; a brother, Henry Koerner of Lanesville; and a sister, Margaret Martin.
Funeral: Sunday, Oct. 22, at Blue Ridge United Methodist Church with interment in Chastain Memorial Park.
Officiant: Dr. John Brantley.
Music: Pat Miller.
Pallbearers: Brian Finnicum, Harry Doss, Michael Gwatney, Larry Hansen, Barry Thomas, Larry Thomas, Bradley Thomas and Tommy Vannoy. Honorary pallbearers were Clarke Mercer, Frank Reece, Mike Scott and Dick Metzgar.
Henry-Cochran Funeral Home of Blue Ridge handled the arrangements.
