Lady Cats win MSC in girls golf
North Harrison’s girls golf team captured the Mid-Southern Conference championship on Saturday afternoon at Western Hills Golf Course in Salem.
The Lady Cats were 11 strokes better than the host club, 375-386. They were followed by Brownstown Central (393), Scottsburg (426), Silver Creek (427), Corydon Central (461), Charlestown (470), Eastern (528) and Clarksville (530).
The victory was just what the team needed heading into Friday’s Seymour Sectional at the Seymour Elks Course.
‘We feel confident going into the sectional,’ North coach Joan Martin said. ‘I’m hoping our team will card 360, and hope that will get us to regional.’
North was paced by Allison Dooley and Courtney Barr’s 91s, with Holli Schulz firing a 95. Megan Woolston had a 98, which included a 42 on the back nine. Rounding out the winners was Katie Tekulve, who had a 125.
Dooley, Barr, Schulz and Woolston all made the all-conference team.
Dooley birdied the first hole and had pars on Nos. 6, 7, 8, 10 and 16 during her round. And despite an out-of-character 10, she still managed to shoot a 91.
Barr’s round included a birdie on the course’s toughest hole (No. 12), and she took par on Nos. 3, 4, 8, 10, 14 and 18.
Woolston’s trip included four pars (2, 12, 15, 18), and after shooting a 56 on the front side, she came back with a 42 on the second nine.
Martin praised the play of Schulz, who had pars on 1, 7, 9, 11 and 14.
‘She was player No. 4 and beat all the number four players,’ Martin said. ‘She really stepped up to the plate as our senior and team captain.’
Corydon Central’s Elizabeth Kitterman shot her team’s low score with a 111. Three players ‘ Heidi Zimmerman (114), Kylie Hall (118) and Melanie Windell (118) ‘ were all in contention for the team’s top spot. Rounding out the Lady Panthers’ card was Gretchen Zimmerman with a 130.
North Harrison came into the match with a loss to New Albany and Providence last Thursday.
New Albany won with a score of 177. They were followed by Providence’s 183 and North’s 198.
Low scores for North were Dooley’s 45 and Barr’s 48. They were followed by Cyndi Garrison’s 52, and Holli Schulz’ 53.
