Corydon girls earn second at 12-under state finals
After winning the nine-team Babe Ruth District 5 tournament in Salem the previous week, the Friends of Harrison County Youth 12-under girls All-star softball team placed second in the state finals, which were held in Tipton last weekend.
The squad opened play on Thursday with a 2-1 win over Frankton. Then it beat 3-Way Recreational, 8-7, on Friday. Corydon knocked off New Palestine, 4-2, then lost to Rushville, 6-5, on Saturday. The Black and Gold came back on Sunday to defeat New Palestine, 2-0, to clinch second place.
In a bit of revenge, as 9- and 10-year-olds two years ago, New Palestine put Corydon out of the state tournament.
Rushville wasn’t to be denied in the state championship game, rolling past Corydon, 13-2.
In addition to finishing second, Corydon landed another honor as Janae Smith received the tournament’s Sportsmanship Award. Rushville’s Alyson Buckley received the tourney’s MVP trophy.
Corydon’s runner-up finish in the state tournament qualifies it for a spot in the seven-state, 14-team regional tournament to be held in Lexington, Ky., starting July 26. The winner of that tourney moves on to the World Series.
Team members for Corydon are Jessica Bartley, Ashley Crawhorn, Abby Ellett, Lindsay Hamilton, Charity Martin, Chelsea Paulley, Shelby Rhodes, Katie Saulman, Angela Shutters, Shannon Sommerville, Janae Smith and Katlyn Whelan. The group is coached by Dan Smith, Tony Crawhorn, Marty Hamilton and Kenny Bartley.
