Doolittle Hill Road will be closed for months
Doolittle Hill Road may remain closed most of the summer, Harrison County Commissioner James Goldman said at the Monday night meeting of the commissioners.
The commissioners declared an emergency at the request of county engineer Kevin Russel who said the move will help expedite funding through the county council to repair damage caused after heavy rain triggered a rock slide destroying a 50-foot section of the road about a month ago.
Noting that the commissioners spent about $160,000 to repair damage resulting from slides following the 1997 flood, Goldman asked Russel if this would be a continual problem with the road.
Russel said that an extensive repair project would be a permanent fix and that Doolittle Hill Road is popular, cutting six or seven miles off of the nearest alternative route for some drivers.
