Panther netters trip SC, 3-2
Corydon Central’s tennis team slid past South Central last Thursday afternoon in Elizabeth, 3-2, to earn the squad’s first victory of the season.
After Corydon’s Akshay Mehrotra fell to Greg Gehlbach, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, and No. 2 player Michael Bennett suffered a 6-1, 6-2 setback, it was up to Michael Goins at No. 3 and the doubles teams of Tyler Hoehn and Gordon Pennington (No. 1s) and Chad Lee and Jake Schinder to come through.
And they did.
Goins won, 6-1, 6-1, Hoehn and Pennington were 6-3, 6-2 winners, and Lee and Schinder outlasted a gutty effort by South’s duo to win, 6-2, 7-5.
‘For the past week I have been pushing the guys really hard in practice and it is starting to show,’ Corydon coach Zach Sipes said. ‘I am very pleased with how Michael Goins is playing at No. 3 singles. He has been our most consentient player so far this year.
‘Our doubles teams are starting to play better. I am really proud of Gordon Pennington and Tyler Hoehn.’
After the win, Corydon wasted no time in picking up victory No. 2, with another 3-2 effort against Paoli.
Mehrotra won at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-3, Goins nabbed the win at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1, and No. 2 doubles pair Hoehn and Pennington emerged victorious, 6-0, 6-3.
The Panthers return to the courts Thursday at home against Silver Creek, and then they’ll host North Harrison next Tuesday.
Both matches are set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
