Taking on the world

Seven fourth-grade students from Morgan Elementary School will take on the world later this month when they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Destination Imagination competition.
Dalton Fessel, Caleb Hamby, Melanie Johnson, Brooke Lamon, Jessica Richards, Jessica Robson and Austin Wheatley qualified for state after winning their division in February in the creative problem-solving competition at Indiana University Southeast.
On April 16, they won state in their division.
‘This group of fourth grade students will compete with the best teams from each state and international teams in Knoxville, on May 25 through 28,’ said Kathy Crimans, the Morgan librarian who coaches the team along with third-grade teacher Lynn Wagoner.
As part of the world competition, the team will perform a technical problem, their skit, Dizzy Derby, and an ‘instant challenge.’ They have been working as a Destination Imagination team since September.
‘The students are specialists at teamwork, cooperation and risk-taking,’ Crimans said.
This is not the first time Morgan Elementary School has had a Destination Imagination team advance to World. Another team went about four years ago.
This year’s team is now raising funds for the trip. The cost is about $535 per student, which includes room and board at the University of Tennessee, but doesn’t take into account travel expenses, Crimans said.
Anyone wishing to make a donation to help fund the team’s trip to World Finals can contact the school at 364-6138.
