Lanesville wins first SAC title in softball

New Washington held a 1-0 lead through three and a half innings of Monday’s Southern Athletic Conference game against Lanesville.
The winner would lay claim to the league title and likely earn the title of being the favorite at next month’s Class 1A sectional.
The Lady Eagles proved their mettle by closing out the final three innings with one, two and three runs to land their first-ever conference championship.
Allison Horton, who pushed her record to 7-1, held New Washington to just one hit.
In the four conference games, Horton struck out 52 in 23 innings, no walks, but one hit batter. She surrendered just two runs and four hits as Lanesville outscored its opponents, 60-2.
Senior shortstop Brittany Mix, who led the SAC in batting average with a mark of .692 this season, knocked a triple in the win.
Ashley Simler, a sophomore, had a double.
As a team, Lanesville batted a sizzling .431 in conference play.
Brittany McKee took the loss for New Washington, which dropped to 7-3.
The squad hosts West Washington at 5:30 on Thursday.
