Rebels nab SAC victory over Borden
South Central head coach Greg Robinson said Saturday night’s Southern Athletic Conference win over Borden was ugly.
But, as many a coach has pointed out, ‘Ugly wins are better than pretty losses, and we’ll take every one we can get,’ Robinson said.
The visiting Rebels outlasted a gutty effort by Borden and posted a narrow victory, 45-43, to remain perfect in league play.
‘It was an exciting game for us, and a good learning experience. We’ll take the win any time we can get them,’ Robinson said. ‘Those games are always important to us. We’ve not done too badly in the conference the past few years and we’d like to keep that up.’
South Central (2-2, 1-0) opened up with a 17-10 lead, but the Braves (1-4, 1-2) were able to trim two off by halftime to trail 24-19.
The Redskins clawed their way back into it and outscored the visitors by seven in the third period, but South wound up rallying from a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter to post the victory.
The win was due in large part to the 23 points by Chad McRae on 10 of 17 shooting. He also had seven rebounds and two blocks.
‘Chad has that capability to do those things. We’d like for him to score easier than he did Friday, because he really had to work for everything he got. His athletic ability allows him to do that. We’ve got to do a better job in getting in position,’ Robinson said. ‘He was definitely the best player on the floor.’
Robinson also praised the play of Dustin Hornickle, who had nine points and seven rebounds, and Derek Kaiser, who notched nine points and five rebounds.
‘Defensively for us, Kyle Cook and Jimmy Jamison did a great job on Borden’s guards. Vick and Ooley are good players and we held them,’ Robinson said.
South’s first double-weekend of the season comes tips off Friday at Christian Academy. The Rebels travel to Springs Valley on Saturday.
