Girl, 13, with rare genetic disorder dies
A Corydon girl born with a rare genetic disorder died late Monday afternoon.
Kaitlynn Marie Wellman, 13, was born April 3, 1991, with mucopolysaccharidosis, MPS Type I, more commonly known as Hurler Syndrome. The genetic disorder carries a life expectancy of about 12 years.
As an infant, Kaity cried a lot and rarely slept, said her mother, Jessica Moss Wellman. But 2-1/2 years passed before Jessica and her husband, Brian, learned that their daughter was born with a fatal disease so rare that little information was available.
Doctors told the couple, who live near Crandall, that Kaity would probably only live to the age of six.
Hurler children are distinguishable by their looks: large heads that tend to be longer than normal from the front to the back, bulging foreheads, shallow eye sockets and protruding bellies.
‘She gained her angel wings at 4:47 p.m. Monday,’ said her mother.
Family members said Kaity ‘died in the loving arms of her family peacefully at home.’
Jessica and Brian said they appreciated the ‘loving care’ provided by Hospice & Palliative Care of Louisville.
Many of Kaity’s aunts, uncles, cousins and friends gathered at the Wellman home Monday night to remember the little girl and comfort each other.
Born at Harrison County Hospital in Corydon, Kaity was a member of Hursttown United Methodist Church and attended North Harrison Elementary School.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Knoefel (Bud) Wellman, and great-grandparents, Lenny Priar, Ora and William Wellman and Fern and Vernie Redden.
Survivors besides her parents include a brother, Josh Wellman; grandparents Alfred (Peck) and Ruth Wellman-Carver of Corydon, Lawrence and Carolyn Moss of Louisville, and Shirley Yarbrough Moss of Greenville, N.C.
Visitation is today (Wednesday) at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. On Friday, visitation will be at Hursttown UMC from 9 a.m. until time of funeral.
The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the church with interment at Bethlehem Cemetery in Crandall.
The Revs. Bruce Hawkins and Rod Shelton will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Ray Saylor, Denise Gianfala, Joe Murdock and Gary Gilley.
The family suggests memorial gifts to Moriah’s Bears of Hope, c/o Art and Cindy Holbert, 56 Sweetwater Lane, Morgantown, WV 26508, or the National MPS Society Inc., In loving memory of Kaitlynn Wellman, 45 Packard Drive, Bangor, ME 04401.
