HCH, doctors improve YMCA health with $42,000 gift

Harrison County Hospital has committed $7,000 a year for three years to the YMCA of Harrison County’s Building Campaign, a total of $21,000, which matches the $21,000 donated by local doctors.
‘Our mission and the YMCA’s are the same: helping the people of our community to become healthy,’ said Dr. Stephen Bodney, chief of staff at the hospital in Corydon. ‘It was fun for all of us, doctors and staff, to join together to help make this project possible.’
The hospital and doctors’ gifts total $42,000, which brings the building goal within a few thousand dollars of completion, said campaign chair Pam Bennett Martin.
Reflecting on the two-year, $5.8 million campaign, Martin said, ‘When we began this campaign two years ago, the economy was positive, and I thought it would be relatively easy. Then came the downturn in the economy, and our faith is what kept us going. What made the YMCA success possible was that everyone came together ‘ big gifts and small ones ‘ all to support what is undoubtedly the greatest economic-social-community strengthening project to come to our county.’
Parvin Baumgart, chairman of the hospital board of trustees, said, ‘At a time when collaborative efforts make possible the very things that seem impossible for our community, we take pleasure in being part of the YMCA’s success. The medical community and the Y have already, and will continue to be, intertwined in mutual concern for bringing good health to our residents.’
The 40,000-square-foot YMCA will open July 3. The building is entirely funded by donations, except for $1 million which the YMCA borrowed in the form of a bond issue.
The YMCA will offer the community two indoor pools, two gymnasiums, two multi-purpose rooms, an indoor walking-running track, basketball and volleyball courts, child watch and locker rooms.
The YMCA will continue to accept gifts to the capital campaign for the next few weeks, when the donor wall will be ordered. Contributions can be made to ‘YMCA of Harrison County’ and mailed to P.O. Box 156, Corydon, IN 47112.
