Zachary D. Smith

Plans for an early morning deer hunt turned tragic Sunday morning when Zachary (Zach) D. Smith of Corydon was killed when the pickup he was riding in went off the New Middletown-Elizabeth Road south of New Middletown and struck a tree head-on.
Zachary was 17 and a junior at Corydon Central High School.
He was riding with his best friend, Gary Sieg, 16, on their way south to Zach’s grandparents’ farm near Elizabeth.
‘They were tighter than ticks, they were close,’ and the boys often hunted at his farm, said Zach’s grandfather, Edward Nance. Zach had left home about 6:15, his mother, Melissa Nance Smith of Corydon, said.
Harrison County Police Officer Rolla Pirtle said, ‘It was awfully foggy and the road was probably slick.’ Pirtle’s report said Sieg’s truck went through a sharp left-hand turn followed by a sharp right-hand turn before it slid off the left-hand side of the road near Ora Lee Steiner’s house and hit the tree about 6:27 a.m.
The air bag on the driver’s side of Sieg’s 1996 Ford F-150 deployed and he was not seriously hurt. He was taken to University Hospital in Louisville and released that day. The truck had no air bag for the passenger side, and Zach was not wearing a seat belt, police said. In Indiana, no one except children is required to wear seat belts in a pickup.
Harrison County Coroner Chad Cesar said Zach died of a fractured cervical vertebra. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cesar said another young man, Patrick Layman, 24, was killed two years ago in another accident at almost the exact same place.
Zach was a football player at CCHS but did not play last season because he’d suffered a severe knee injury and had his right knee rebuilt. He studied auto mechanics at Prossser School of Technology in New Albany.
Zachary was born in Louisville on Sept. 4, 1986, the son of David C. and Melissa (Missy) A. Nance Smith of Corydon.
He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church near Lanesville.
He was preceded in death by his other grandfather, David G. Smith.
Survivors besides his parents include a younger brother, Jordan W. Smith, at home, and grandparents Joyce A. Smith of New Albany and Edward and Novita K. Nance of Elizabeth.
Visitation will be today (Wednesday) from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and tomorrow after 9 a.m. at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon.
The funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church outside Lanesville with burial in the church cemetery. Pastor Richard A. Heinz will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Carnley, Ryan Funk, Matt Marion, John Deatrick, Chris Duley and Dustin Graham.
Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Nance and Gary Sieg.
