One of Mauckport’s claims to fame was its gritty high school boys basketball teams, which played on a dirt court just a few yards away from the school building. You read that right: a dirt court.
Mauckport caught a few chuckles for that dubious distinction, but the players did their talking on the court and even won a couple of Harrison County Tournament championships.
The Mauckport Pilots, as they were known before consolidating with Corydon, now have the last laugh: they are featured on the latest book by Hoosier author Bob Adams.
Adams, who hails from Decatur, is a high school hoops guru. His intense research into all things Planet Basketball has paid off in an absolute gem. It’s a 128-page photo essay on the history of roundball in the Hoosier state.
The book, titled ‘Images of Sports: Hoosier High School Basketball,’ is a retrospective into the state religion. It’s full of team, individual player and coach and gymnasium photographs dating to the early 1900s.
Some of the old goal halls were nothing more than barns decorated with a couple of iron rims.
Mauckport is featured on the cover, and the last team photo from 1949-50 is included, too.
‘I wanted to include a picture of Mauckport in the book, and of all the pictures I had, it just seemed to fit the cover better,’ Adams said. ‘I had some contact there with a Mrs. (Nina Faith) Beanblossom, who sent me this picture plus a couple of others.
‘The book contains over 200 pictures of early teams-both boys and girls, pictures of cheerleaders (including Nina Faith), gyms, coaches and mascots. Many of the pictures I took myself, many came from a friend of mine who has a collection of over 800 yearbooks, and some came from other people around the state who sent me pictures for another book I did called ‘Silenced Bells.’ ‘
‘Silenced Bells’ contains more than 1,000 pictures of former Indiana high schools along with school nicknames, colors, dates the school was in the IHSAA, and if the school is still standing or in use.
Other local schools with snapshots in the book include Marengo, Milltown and Laconia.
Images retails for $19.99, plus $3.50 for shipping, for a total of $23.49. It can be ordered by contacting Adams at 1115 W. Madison Street, Decatur, IN, 46733, or through Arcadia Publishing at www.arcadiapublishing.com
