Marengo man drowns
A Marengo man drowned Sunday afternoon while swimming at a quarry near Patoka Lake.
Brian B. Kumm, who was celebrating his 20th birthday that day, was swimming at Mulzer Quarry about 4 p.m. (slow time) when he called for help, according Indiana Conservation Officer Mac Spainhour, public information officer for District 8.
According to witnesses, Kumm had jumped in the water and was making his way across a section of the quarry before he became distressed, Spainhour said.
Persons swimming with Kumm had to leave to call for help because there was no cell phone signal available there, Spainhour said.
‘I don’t know where they went, but they had to go away to call,’ he said.
Spainhour didn’t know how many people were swimming illegally at the quarry with Kumm, but he said there were about 10 people still there when conservation officers arrived.
Kumm’s body was recovered Monday about 10:55 a.m. (slow time) in water about 65 feet deep, Spainhour said.
An autopsy was being performed, but Spainhour said there appeared to be no evidence of drugs or alcohol.
Spainhour recommended that persons wear life jackets while swimming in case they experience cramps or other problems.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Brown-Newkirk Funeral Home in Milltown.
