Eight wrestlers from Corydon Central advanced from the Jeffersonville Sectional on Saturday and will compete again at William S. Johnson Arena this Saturday in the Jeffersonville Regional.
Chris Paulley and Tyler Williams were both crowned sectional champions in their respective weight classes, with Brian Eads and Chris Gill both finishing second.
While the Panthers had no one finish third, they did also advance David Bradstock, Jason Ward, David Terhune and Jimmy Ward, who all finished fourth.
Paulley (31-7), wrestling in the 130-lb. weight class, pinned Michael Cheeseman of New Albany in :523 to capture his championship. Earlier in the day, he defeated Jeffersonville’s Barrington Adkins by a pin in the second period.
Williams downed Kevin Cooke of Jeff in the early round of 152 and then put a technical fall on Nick Phillips of Floyd Central in the final to improve to 35-3 on the season.
Eads (32-5), in the 112-weight class, was defeated by Brad Spine of Floyd Central, 14-5, after he’d beaten Cameron Cain of Jeff in the second round, 10-1.
Gill (23-7) also lost by points to Charlestown’s Ryan Kendrick, 8-2, in the 119 class. Gill was an 11-3 winner over Marty Terry of Floyd Central as well.
At 145, Jason Ward (27-11) wound up third by defeating Jeff’s Andrew Logsdon, 6-1, in the consolation round. Earlier, Ward was knocked off by a 4-3 score to Mark Morris 0of New Washington
Terhune (25-10) fell, 7-2, in the 171-lb. weight class to Josh Higgs of Jeffersonville for fourth place. He was defeated by Adrian Reif of Providence earlier, 19-3.
At 215, Jimmy Ward (26-13) was defeated by Charlestown’s Charlie Jeffries. He also was clipped by Floyd Central’s David Sandlin, 9-2.
Andrew Wilburn of Providence stuck Bradstock (15-6) in the consolation of 125 at the 2:54 mark, however the Panther grappler still advanced to Saturday’s regional round.
Finishing in fifth place for Corydon was Marco Rocca at 140, Joey Falaro was sixth at 160 and Eric Hoehn was sixth at 189.
In the team standings, Floyd Central won with 266 points, Providence was second at 242, Charlestown got up for third with 226.5, Jeff was fourth with 222 and Corydon was fifth with 189 points.
Rounding out the field were: New Albany (118.5), New Washington (56), Salem (32), Eastern (18).
The top three wrestlers in each weight class at the Jeffersonville Regional will advance to the Evansville Reitz Semistate at Roberts Stadium in Evansville on Feb. 15.
