CCJHS claims girls county crown

Corydon Central continued its winning ways in the Harrison County Junior High Tournament on Saturday in Lanesville.
Powered by Bethany Shewmaker’s 18 points, the Lady Panthers took a two-point lead in the first quarter and built it to 23-16 by halftime. South Central actually outscored Corydon in the second half, 18-17, but it wasn’t quite enough to overcome the first half deficit as the Lady Rebels lost a heart-breaker, 40-36.
The victory was the Lady Panthers sixth in the past eight years and second in a row. North Harrison was the only club to sniff the trophy during the stretch (in ’00 and ’01).
Corydon, which finished at 16-4 this season, got nine points from Joshlyn Bube, five from Teresa Greer and two each from Stephanie Smith, Jill Hoehn, Amber Morris and Courtney Cato.
Also on the roster are Talena Harrison, Kim Barth, Amy Veron, Christine Berry and Tori Dunn. The squad is coached by Keith Marshall.
“They always gave 100 percent throughout the year,” Marshall said. “Sometimes we would break down mentally, but never physically. They are a great group of girls.”
Corydon was 13 of 20 at the foul line and hit three threes (one by Shewmaker and two by Bube).
South Central, which was led by prodigy 7th-grader Brittany Schoen and her 15 points, also picked up nine points from Kaela Orwick, four each from Sarah Yelch and Justine Huffman and two from Kate Hanus.
Filling out the Lady Rebels’ roster is Rachel Pierce, Amanda Dunn, Sharmila Wells and Tamara McGuirk.
South hit seven of 14 tries from the charity stripe, with Schoen bagging three threes.
To get the championship game, Corydon defeated St. John’s, 35-12.
