CC stumbles at Old Cap
Columbus North led from gate to wire in the 19th annual Old Capitol Wrestling Classic on Saturday at Corydon Central High School.
It was the school’s first Classic title.
The host Panthers wound up in last place in the eight-team event and had no individual champions or runner-up finishes. Several wrestlers did come home in third and fourth place, however.
Bryan Eads in 112-lb. won his first match against Chase Worrell of Princeton, was defeated by Ryan Hildinger of Columbus North in the second round and came home third overall.
Tyler Williams was also third in 152 after defeating Brad Taylor of Heritage Hills in the first round and wrestling back in the consolation round. Chris Paulley was fourth in 130, Dustin Graham got fourth in 135 and Jason Ward was fourth in 145. Jason Ward, at 215, won his first round bout versus Travis Herran of Columbus North and fell in his second bout of the afternoon.
“The semifinal round did us in,” Corydon coach Richard Clipp said. “We were right in the middle of the pack before that and things kind of fell apart for us. We wrestled well and all of the matches were close. We just didn’t get the wins.”
The Panthers return to the mats this Saturday at Southwestern for the Southern Indiana Wrestling Tournament, which begins at 9:30 a.m.
Corydon has four No. 1 seeds: Eads, Paulley, Graham and Williams.
“Charlestown will probably be the favorite with 11 of their 14 guys seeded. Providence will be there, too, with the most No. 1 seeds,” Clipp said. “I think we can be in there. We’ll have to upset some people to do it, but we can finish from first to fourth I think if we wrestle like I think we can.”
The following week, Corydon takes part in the Mid-Southern Conference wrestling tournament at Charlestown.
Team scores: Columbus North 183, Evansville Reitz 128, Floyd Central 120.5, Princeton 117, Castle 105.5, Bloomington North 98.5, Heritage Hills 88, Corydon 75.
