Elizabeth woman, 19, dies in S.R. 111 crash
An Elizabeth woman was pronounced dead Monday at the scene of an early morning automobile accident on S.R. 111 about two miles south of Doolittle Hill Road near Elizabeth.
A Harrison County Sheriff’s Dept. report said Chyann Marie Nevitt Collard, 19, suffered severe chest and head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Harrison County Coroner’s office.
Scott Powers, 21, Sellersburg, the driver of the car, sustained broken bones and internal injuries. He was air transported to the University of Louisville Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.
The preliminary accident investigation found that the 1988 Toyota Celica Turbo driven by Powers was south-bound on 111 about 5:40 a.m. when it began to lose traction leaving approximately 270 feet of high speed yaw marks.
The car left the road on the east side, became airborne for nearly 25 feet and hit a tree on the passenger-side door.
The primary cause of the collision is being attributed to high speed. Police have not ruled out alcohol as a contributing factor.
Collard attended South Central Junior-Senior High School and Grace Tabernacle Church.
She is survived by her parents, Scott Nevitt of Louisville and Lisa Roman of Elizabeth; two sisters, Samantha Roman of San Diego and Hailey Williams of Valley City, and two grandmothers, Alma Collard of Elizabeth and Schmon Gibson of Louisville.
Visitation will be today (Wednesday) from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and tomorrow after 8 a.m. at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon.
The funeral will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Greg Carter will officiate.
