Absentee votes can be cast in clerk’s office

With the May 7 Primary less than two weeks away, voters might want to take note of some changes and some dates that could apply to their voting plans.
Absentee ballots can be cast now at the Harrison County Court House in the Harrison Circuit Court Clerk’s office from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, said circuit clerk Carole Gaither. That process began April 8.
The courthouse is accessible to voters with handicaps, Gaither said, and the County Annex Building, at 124 S. Mulberry St. in Corydon, has been designated as the handicapped-accessible polling place.
Voters who want to cast absentee ballots can do it on two Saturdays, April 27 and May 4, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Persons requesting an absentee ballot by mail must submit an application by Monday, April 29.
A request for a third way to cast an absentee ballot — through the traveling board — should be made to the Clerk’s office as soon as possible. Members of the traveling board will begin making rounds on April 25, Gaither said.
Also, some voters may have received new Receipt of Registration cards.
Gaither said newly registered voters, as well as voters who may have moved within the county and voters affected by a new precinct, are getting the receipts. “We have several more to mail out,” she said yesterday.
The new precinct is Corydon East, which will be at the County Annex Building in Corydon. “It affects the town portion of Northwest Harrison Township,” Gaither said.
Voters, regardless of whether they are going to the clerk’s office prior to election day or exercising their rights at their regular polling place, should have their voter registration card with them.
Gaither said they may be asked to give their driver’s license number (or identification number if they don’t have a driver’s license) or the last four digits of their Social Security number.
“This is one of the biggest changes voters may notice,” Gaither said.
