Evelyn L. Best

Evelyn L. Best, 93, died Sunday, March 31, at Providence Retirement Community in New Albany.
Born July 6, 1908, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Florence J. Scott Best.
She was a graduate of Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand and St. Joseph School of Nursing in Louisville. She taught nursing and was a clinical instructor at St. Joseph Cancer Clinic in Louisville. She also taught home nursing, baby care and disaster nursing techniques to other registered nurses.
She was a volunteer nurse and instructor for the Louisville Red Cross for 35 years, and the Visiting Nurses Association of Louisville.
She was the first Louisvillian to be awarded the Estabrook Award in recognition of her ingenuity, initiative, teaching abilities and leadership in all phases of Red Cross nursing.
Survivors include a brother, Alois Best of Floyds Knobs; and a niece and nephew, Mary Ann Duffy and David Best, both of Floyds Knobs, whom cared for her.
A funeral Mass was held Wednesday, April 3, at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Cemetery. Generations Funeral Home in New Albany handled the arrangements.
The family suggests memorial gifts to Providence Retirement Community or St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church.
