Selma N. Shipley

Selma Nadine Smith Shipley, 83, Georgetown, died at 1 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville.
A native of Shelbyville, born Feb. 8, she was the daughter of the late Jordon Otis and Edith Creed Smith.
She attended grade schools run by the Sisters of Charity in Henderson, Ky., and earned a degree in English and physical education from Western Kentucky State Teachers College. She taught at Valley High School in Valley Station, Ky., Smyrna Elementary School in Okolona, Ky., Morgan Township High School, Milltown High School, North Central/Harrison High School and Corydon High School. She later earned a master’s degree in education from Indiana State University.
She was a past president of the InterAmerican Women’s Club in Panama and worked with numerous charities.
Survivors include her sister, Katherine Tilley of California; two sons, Alden P. Shipley Jr. and Capt. James L. Shipley III of Georgetown; a grandson, and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral was Friday, Feb. 22, at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Georgetown with burial in Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville.
