Beckort to lead Chamber board

Paul D. Beckort, CEO of Harrison REMC, is the new president of the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce of Harrison County for 2002. His one-year term began Jan. 1.
Beckort, who has served on the Chamber board since 1997, succeeds Martin F. Bachman, president of Corydon Stone and Asphalt Inc.
Each year, the president-elect is nominated by the current president, the president-elect, the past president and treasurer. Those positions were held by Bachman, Beckort, Denny M. Leffler, credit manager for Keller Manufacturing Co., and Jeffrey L. Davis, CFO of Harrison County Hospital, respectively. The president-elect nominee then is endorsed by the executive committee and approved by the entire board.
Beckort said his priority this year will be to enhance member benefits whereby all Chamber members can and want to participate in the Chamber’s activities.
After graduating from Indiana University in 1967, Beckort served in the U.S. Army from 1968 through 1970. Soon after he began his career with Harrison County REMC, a Touchtone Energy Cooperative.
Beckort also serves on the board of directors for the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana, the Harrison County Community Foundation, Harrison County Economic Development Committee, and the Indiana Service Concept Board of Managers.
He lives on a farm and is in partnership with his son, Brian Beckort, in an auction business.
As CEO of Harrison REMC, Beckort oversees the overall management responsibility for a 20,000-member electric utility.
Beckort will preside over the 2002 board of directors, which consists of Bachman; Davis; Barbara K. Albin, vice president/CFO, James L. Shireman, Inc.; Carl Duley, Harrison County councilman; James Goldman, Harrison County commissioner; Gary Roberson, former co-owner of Marengo Cave and Cave Country Canoes; Frederick K. Cammack, Corydon Town Council president; Linda C. McKim, manager, Hampton Inn; Monty Schneider, superintendent, North Harrison Community School Corp.; Michael B. Wiseman, board president, Harrison County Convention & Visitors Bureau; Charles Gannon, representative, Southern Indiana Chamber of Commerce; and James Klinstiver, president, Klinstiver’s Inc.
