Weather causes changes to school schedule

February 18, 2014

After winter weather postponed the first meeting attempt of the South Harrison Community School Corp. Board of Trustees, the board briefly met Friday afternoon, Feb. 7, and discussed the new schedule for the remainder of the 2013-14 school year after 10 days have been canceled because of inclement weather.

School will now be in session the second week of spring break, scheduled for March 31 through April 4, eliminating the intersession program.

The third grading period end date was pushed back a week to March 21.

As for future make-up days, if winter weather causes more school closings, Supt. Dr. Neyland Clark said they have a little wiggle room but not much.

He said Good Friday (April 18) and June 5 and 6 could still be used (graduation is set for June 8). Clark said he'd also stay apprised on possible creativity at the state level regarding making up days/hours.

"We'll take a careful look at any (Dept. of Education) suggestions," he said.

Testing time for ISTEP has also been increased to help schools cope with scheduling. The window for ISTEP testing is now March 3 through 21, instead of March 3 through 12. Teacher-development training has also been moved to after testing to ensure the students are prepared for the tests.

In other business, the board moved to allow Clark to request bids and quotes for laptop computer purchases for sixth through eighth grades corporation-wide. The laptops will stay at the schools, Clark said.

The board also approved the proposed CES roofing project, which complies with the comprehensive roof plan, Clark said.

In personnel items, the board approved: Stephanie Ross, Christine Randolph and Janet Roberson, Homebound Instructors; the resignation of Beverley Garrison for retirement as director of Harrison County Exceptional Learners Cooperative (effective at the end of the school year); Cynthia Garrison, Essential Skills Job Coach; Jimmy Conrad 1/2 assistant boys' track coach; Alex Zimmerman, 1/2 assistant boys' track coach; Steve Sipes, volunteer boys' baseball coach; Mariya Goller, temporary teacher; Kristy Day, LPN/instructional assistant; Amy Goodpaster, special education instructional assistant; Leslie Holdridge, teacher; Brad Wiseman, assistant baseball coach; Phillip Turner, South Central band program; and retirement clarification on letter of resignation for Dr. Clark.

All board members thanked Garrison for work she has put in, not only for South Harrison, but county-wide.

The board's next meeting will be Tuesday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. (6:30 executive session) at Heth-Washington Elementary School. In a change, April's meeting will at the Edmund (Ed) F. Schneider Administrative Center instead of the junior high school because of the Harrison REMC annual meeting. The May school board meeting will be at Corydon Central Junior High School.
