A man died Thursday afternoon as a result of injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash.

According to a crash report from the Harrison County Sheriff's Dept., Gerald (David) McCarty, 55, was driving a 2009 Chevy Malibu west on Lickford Bridge Road when the car's right side tires went off the roadway. McCarty over-corrected and went across the eastbound lane and struck a large tree with the right front of the vehicle.

After the collision, the car slid 22 feet before coming to rest.

Police said there were no witnesses to the crash and that, while the car's airbags deployed, McCarty was not wearing a seat belt. According to the report, McCarty died as a result of "traumatic internal injuries."

Through further investigation, an open bottle of Smirnoff vodka was found on the floorboard of the vehicle, and the speedometer was stuck at approximately 65 mph.

The coroner's office was contacted by police to obtain McCarty's blood at Harrison County Hospital to determine if alcohol may have been a factor. McCarty's blood alcohol content was 0.165 at the time of the crash.
