1st baby of new decade arrives

January 06, 2010 | 08:20 AM

Steven and Mandy Mattingly nearly received a surprise tax deduction but instead they had the first baby born at Harrison County Hospital during the new decade.

Mandy said her original due date was Jan. 1 then her obstetrician, Dr. Analiza Justo, later changed it to Jan. 12.

But the unborn baby had other plans and sent his parents, who reside in Harrison County, to the hospital on New Year's Eve.

Mandy said yesterday (Tuesday) that she thought she was in labor Dec. 31 but after arriving at HCH, the labor pains stopped.

"I thought we were going to have him New Year's Eve," Justo said yesterday as she checked on the baby and mom.

The couple went home only to return a few days later. This time the labor was real. Justo, who has been in practice here since August, delivered a healthy, 8-pound, 4-ounce boy at 4 p.m. Monday. He was 21 inches long.

The couple decided on naming him Owen Wayne Junior Mattingly.

Mandy said Steven had wanted to name the baby after himself, but Mandy and her mother-in-law didn't like the idea of a junior and senior, so they talked the new dad into giving the baby his middle name and spelling out junior as another middle name.

Owen Wayne Junior Mattingly is the first grandbaby on both sides of the family, which could explain why there was a roomful of admirers Monday evening, including Mandy's brother, Steven House.

Grandparents are James and Virginia Sue House of Depauw and John and Nancy Collard of New Middletown. Great-grandparents are Leander Jr. and Connie House of Georgetown, Ramona Sue Lamar of Milltown and Ella Burns of Corydon.

"Everyone had wanted to be in the delivery room," Mandy said, but the couple opted to have only her mother, Steven's sister, Candy Etzig, and her "best friend," Katie Nelson.

The latest "new year baby" in recent years was delivered on Jan. 3 at 4:22 p.m. in 2005.
