Fleace, Wetzel earn MSC wins

May 21, 2014 | 12:20 PM

North Harrison's duo of Daniel Fleace and Curtis Wetzel continued the recent domination of Cougars' distance runners at the Mid-Southern Conference boys' track and field meet Thursday in Corydon.

Fleace swept the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, while Wetzel snagged the 800.

Team-wise, no one could catch Silver Creek which used a pair of relay triumphs to score 126 points. Brownstown Central was the runner up with 112, followed by a tie for third between Corydon Central and North Harrison (84).

It was fairly comfortable margins of victory for Fleace. It was a three-second win in the 1,600, rolling to a quick time of 4:27.97, while Wetzel placed third (4:39.41).

Coming back later in the meet to compete in the 3,200, Fleace ran a huge effort, completing the eight circuits in 9:50.70. He was nearly 10 seconds faster than runner-up Ryan Franklin (Brownstown Central).

Also in the 3,200, Corydon Central's Jonathan Leaf (10:45.01) earned the sixth-place spot.

Wetzel, a regional qualifier in the 800 and 1,600 last year, had to hold off Silver Creek's Morgan Davidson to capture the 800. The junior won the race in 2:02.11, while Corydon Central's Jeremy Buess was fifth (2:03.86) and Grant Robinson was sixth (2:06.71).

In the one-lap 400, Corydon Central's Noah Lamure was fifth in 54.61 seconds.

Sprinting events went to Clarksville's Marquise Parrish. The speedy state qualifier last year won the MSC's 100 (11.07 seconds) and 200 (22.71).

Finishing second to Parrish was Corydon Central's Clayton Miller. A Union College signee, Miller ran in the 100 in 11.43 seconds and the 200 in 23.49. Panther teammate Kessler Martin was third in the 100 (11.65) and sixth in the 200 (24.70).

North Harrison's top sprinter was Gary Blankenship, who was fifth in the 200 (24.10).

Kessler was runner up to Parrish in the long jump by a close margin. Parrish' best leap was 20 feet, 1-inch while Martin was second with a 20-0 mark. North Harrison's Dylan Knopp was sixth (19-1).

Knopp had a solid day at the high jump, taking second with his best, clearing 6-2. Winner Jacob Wilson (Brownstown Central) also cleared 6-2 but won on the tie-breaker.

Also in the high jump, Corydon Central's Grant Smith was third (5-10) and Blankenship was fifth (5-10).

North Harrison scored additional points in throwing events with efforts from Dayton van Uitert and Cody Bennett. Van Uitert was second in the shot put (44-2-1/2) and Bennett was sixth in the discus (121-3-1/2).

Nick Keith was the lone scorer in the hurdles for Corydon Central, taking seventh in the 110 (17.82) and fifth in the 300 (44.72).

In team events, Corydon Central was second in the 400 relay (46.36) and the 1,600 relay (3:40.76). The Panthers also took third in the 3,200 relay, running in 8:31.

North Harrison's best relay effort was in the 1,600, placing fourth (3:45.10). Silver Creek captured the 1,600 and 3,200 relays, while Eastern (Pekin) won the 400 relay.

Corydon Central is scheduled to host the boys' track and field sectional tomorrow (Thursday) at 6 p.m. The top four place winners in each event advance to the Bloomington North Regional, scheduled for May 29. Admission will be $6.
