NH, Lanesville net champs at Crawford Invite

May 14, 2014 | 11:15 AM

A soggy Friday night didn't derail the Crawford County Invitational at the Wolfpack tennis courts Saturday morning.

The four-team invitational was swept by champions from North Harrison and Lanesville, with the Lady Cats capturing three brackets to Lanesville's two. The end result was North Harrison taking the team title with 19 points, while Lanesville was second with 17. Placing third was Crawford County (14) followed by South Central (5).

North Harrison's path to the team title went through the top two singles courts, with No. 2 doubles.

Playing in No. 1 singles, Maddie Janes had little trouble to take her first position in the bracket. She disposed of Lanesville's Maddie Johnson in the first round 6-3, 6-3, then swept Crawford County's Makdayla Young in the finals 6-0, 6-0.

Taking care of business in No. 2 singles was North Harrison's Lindsey Shumaker. She had a routine day, winning every set she played 6-0. Shumaker took down Lanesville's Elise Lawson in the first round followed by Crawford County's Abigail Pierson in the championship.

Rounding out North Harrison's championship effort was the doubles tandem of Lexi James and Kaylee Nordhoff. Hitting the court in the final, they swept Lanesville's Merritt Johnson and Rachel Bachman 6-1, 6-0. To reach the final, they defeated Crawford County's pair, Alice Guimaraes  and Baylie Bean 6-2, 6-0.

The day also wasn't bad for Lanesville.

Madison Cunningham and Maddie Ford rode a pair of victories to the No. 1 doubles' crown. The duo swept Crawford County's Shaynne Cook and Morgan Pittman 6-2, 6-0 in the championship. The path to the final involved a tough match against North Harrison's Payton and Sydney Fravel. Lanesville would win the match 6-2, 6-4.

Lanesville's second champ came from No. 3 singles. Ivy Cooke defeated North Harrison's Rachel Biddle 6-1, 6-4 in the semi-final before rolling to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Crawford County's Alia Satterfield in the final.

The following won consolation pro-set matches: No. 1 singles - Maddie Johnson (Lanesville) defeated Josie Faith (South Central), 8-1; No. 2 singles - Elise Lawson (Lanesville) defeated Maddy Brashear (South Central) 8-1; No. 3 singles - Rachel Biddle (North Harrison) defeated Brooklyn Woertz (South Central), 8-0; No. 1 doubles - Payton Fravel/Sydney Fravel (North Harrison) defeated Shelby Foley/Suzanna Bond (South Central), 8-0; No. 2 doubles - Alice Guimaraes/Baylie Bean (Crawford County) defeated Gracie Riley/Jordan Miller (South Central), 8-3.
