Trip to Evansville lands Panthers another victory

February 19, 2014 | 02:03 PM

The trip Saturday to Evansville North for an afternoon tilt with the Huskies started off slow for the Class 3A No. 5 Corydon Central boys' basketball team.

Allowing North to lead early in the second quarter was enough playing around for the Panthers. The 21-19 lead North had in the second quarter quickly vanished with tighter defense the rest of the way by Corydon Central.

A 13-3 Panthers run to end the second quarter led to a resounding 68-38 win on the home floor of the Huskies, a sparkling gymnasium that's only a few years old.

The win was the fifth in a row for the Panthers, who improved to 15-2.

In the decisive second quarter, the trading of baskets that happened through much of the first quarter disappeared. Mitchell Frederick started the 13-3 run with a field goal followed by Tommy Wiseman picking off a pass for an easy two. Timothy Wiseman chipped in a triple, while Bronson Kessinger and Frederick added more points to give Corydon Central a 32-24 halftime lead.

North was able to keep pace in the first part of the third quarter, but the powerful Panthers eventually pulled away with ease.

Tommy Wiseman had an impressive effort, scoring 15 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. He was six of eight from the floor to go with four assists.

Leading the way in scoring was Kessinger with 18 points, including a trey. He also had nine boards.

Other top scorers for the Panthers were Timothy Wiseman (11 points), Frederick (8) and Dillion Simler (7). Brayden Lander contributed five points and five assists.

As a team, Corydon Central shot 52 percent from the field while nearly doubling the Huskies on the glass, out-rebounding them 41-21.

Robert West paced North in scoring with 14 points, making four 3-pointers.

Corydon Central will return to Mid-Southern Conference play Friday when the Panthers host Silver Creek at 7:30 p.m. The Dragons ride a four-game winning streak into the match-up while sitting atop the league at 5-0. Corydon Central, Clarksville and Brownstown have one loss each in MSC play.
