Panthers romp in MSC games

February 12, 2014 | 10:46 AM

Heading into the latter third of the boys' basketball season, Corydon Central continued its winning ways during the weekend with a pair of lopsided Mid-Southern Conference victories.

On Friday, the Panthers traveled to Eastern (Pekin) and came away with an 80-35 decision behind 18-point performances by Brayden Lander and Bronson Kessinger.

The Musketeers held steady through the early part of the game, but Corydon Central easily pulled away, aided by shooting 67 percent (32 of 48) from the field. Eastern was limited to shooting 30 percent.

Lander made seven of 12 shots for his points to go with a game-high six rebounds. Kessinger was near perfect from the field, making eight of nine buckets.

Also reaching double-figure scoring was Dillion Simler, who had 12 points. Tommy Wiseman chipped in nine points while dishing five assists and coming up with four steals.

Returning home on Saturday, Corydon Central overcame a low-scoring first quarter to blow away Charlestown 52-26.

The score held even, 9-9, after the opening eight minutes, but the rest of the way was all Panthers. During the next two frames, Corydon Central built a 47-18 lead after three quarters.

As a team, Corydon Central dished 12 assists to shoot 53 percent (16 of 30). Kessinger led the way with 12 points, three steals and three blocked shots.

Tommy Wiseman and Lander scored 10 points each, while Wiseman paced the team on the glass with seven boards. Mitchell Frederick chipped in six points.

With the wins, Corydon Central improved to 13-2 on the season, including a 6-1 mark in the MSC.

The Class 3A No. 5 Panthers will return to action tomorrow (Thursday) when they travel to Austin for a 7:30 p.m. tip. They'll embark on another road trip Saturday when they visit Evansville North; game time will be at 2:30 p.m.
